Austria Open G1
Jack Woolley resumed his attack on World Taekwondo in June in Innsbruck, Austria where he attended his 7th Open Ranking event of the year. Jack was joined by club coach Anas Belmaati who took the chair in the latest edition of the World Taekwondo Federation’s ranking event series. Seeded 1st in the division Jack had a late start with his high seeding guaranteeing him a bye in the first round. In the second round he warmed up with a 24-5 win over German Imran Oezkaya. This led to a quarter final encounter with well established French National player Stephaine Audibert who Jack saw off comfortably 12-0. Now guaranteed a medal Jack faced the Turkish number one Mert Erdogan, and managed a hat trick of matches with early finishes by the WTF 12 point gap rule (Match stopped if score exceeds 12 points). A mouthwatering final against World bronze medalist Ramnarong Sawekwiharee of Thailand was now on the cards for South Dublin Taekwondo’s 17 year old athlete, a much desired match with one of the worlds most prominent fighters. The fight ended 6-4 in favour of Thailand with a silver medal for Woolley. It proved a valuable bounce back from a disappointing Euros last month, and young Woolley secured himself another valuable 6 world ranking points. He also reached the 60 point maximum Olympic point collection (max 60 per year), the first athlete in the world this year to reach this milestone.
