Open Challenge Cup Belgium 2013

We had a Team Travel to Brussels once again for the Open Challenge Cup 2013, a 2 day event with Poomsae on Saturday & Kyorugi on the Sunday. Team building was very much the objective with players from Novice – Advanced all travelling together to an event that typically caters for all.

Sunday’s Kyorugi Team With Silverware

Great fun was had on the trip which was capped off with an entertaining evening on the Sunday Night back in the hotel where SDTKD students showed of their may hidden talents with games.

From a competitive perspective, the event was once again a reminder of the level of competition in Europe which is a big step up. We had mixed fortunes on both days with some players taking home medals in Poomsae, Pairs, Synchron & Kyorugi, details below.

Whilst the novice – intermediate players found it quite difficult to make an impact in their divisions, we were delighted to see a very strong Junior-Senior Kyorugi team wrap up the Sunday afternoon proceedings with a very positive outlook on the day. With 5 SDTKD black belts in action as a TEAM throughout a strong warm up and preparation for their matches, they set an excellent example to onlooking youngsters in our club who will be at this level in coming years. Whilst out ream picked up a good collection of medals throughout the weekend, stand-out performances would include:

  • New 3 man Poomsae team formation retaining the 3 man title in Belgium. Dylan, Jack & Ryan took the gold.
  • Impressive bronze for Nathan in Cadets A Class Poomsae.
  • Ryan Woolley’s blistering display in his -68kg division, only to be undone in semi final with a shocking centre refereeing decision to award his opponent with 3 points for a kick that he also kyong-go’d  the player for [falling on ground as kicking].
  • An excellent return to -54kg for Alex Murphy who was going well against a ranking Israeli player when at 3-3 had a bad fall on right arm. Withdrew from final to concede to Silver with suspected fracture.
  • Juniors Glen Leonard & Jack Woolley picking up the team Kyorugi Gold’s with excellent sparring displays in their -51kg / -48kg divisions.
