South Dublin Taekwondo

SDTKD Championships 2015

On 6th June Tallaght Leisure Centre was the venue for an international World Taekwondo Federation (Olympic Style) tournament hosted by South Dublin Taekwondo (SDTKD), and Supported by the Irish Taekwondo Union, the National Governing Body for WTF Taekwondo in Ireland. The event saw 250 players from home and abroad compete in the first tournament in Ireland to utilise full PSS [Protector Scoring Systems] both electronic scoring body protectors, and electronic head protectors. The head protectors are the ITU’s most recent investment in the development of taekwondo to align with full scoring systems that will be used in the Rio 2016 Olympics. The electronic systems remove much responsibility of scoring from judges and have proven to add to the fair play & transparency of results worldwide.

Nelly won a bronze in her first event!

Some local highlights include young Nelly Magdziak who is a member of SDTKD’s Taekwondo Tots programme stepping up in her first competitive outing to medal in the -20kg Pee Wee beginner division, Shae Yambao won in his -20kg Pee Wee beginner category, where the visiting centre referee noted his as a ‘kicking machine’ complimenting his non-stop kicking style. Red belt Leroy Dilandu excelled in his division winning with some great tactical fighting where he won an exciting final by golden point coached by Anas.

3rd Place Team – Sport Taekwondo Ireland

From a club perspective our biggest victory of the day was the team effort and team work. We had all available black belts contribute on a strong day of coaching and volunteering as officials. Our parents were immense in assisting throughout to allow our members have a memorable team outing. As always we strive to improve, and were a bit disappointed the barriers we rented were not permitted into the hall by the local council. This would have assisted the people management on the day, but the badminton nets and goal posts had to suffice as an alternative!

2nd Place Team – Champion Taekwondo

The final team standings finished with a very competitive fight for team trophies, with Sport Taekwondo Ireland placing 3rd, Champion Taekwondo 2nd, and host club SDTKD placing 1st with their collection of 16 gold medals, 19 silver medals and 10 bronze medals. The team trophies were presented by the Irish Taekwondo Union President at the end of the long hard fought day.

1st Place team – South Dublin Taekwondo

We would like to thank the efforts of the diligent centre referees and corner judges for assisting with the tournament which was run efficiently with the latest technological software utilised in WTF Taekwondo. The tournament can only be as good as the officials who give up their time, and we had a great effort from centre referees Erika Martin O’Shaughnessy, Keith Evans & Ytang, top table TA’s Brenda Mahon, Suzanne & Lee, President Martin Fleming who was the engine keeping things running, Anto McInerney for running the match management, Gerry Monaghan behind the scenes and of course all of those who contributed with corner judging.

Thanks to the Civil Defence first aid and thanks to Tallaght Leisure Centre for being so accommodating as usual. Not to forget all the excellent volunteers from SDTKD Club: Judges Ryan Woolley, Jack Woolley, Aoibhe Thornton & Louise Lawless. Top table assistants Rhys, Jamilah, Louise & Jamie, inspection desk Aoibhe & Annette, Niamh who coordinated weigh in and catering and all the parents who assisted! Finally a special word of note to the host coaches who were ran off feet all day: Dylan, Anas, Pauline & Jamilah…. have had some great feedback from visitors. On behalf of SDTKD, thank you to the Irish Taekwondo Union & all who contributed. Hope you enjoyed the day.
